Tenerife is an ideal destination to travel with your family. That is why we offer nine activities to enjoy Tenerife with kids, with a hint of playing and fun for the little ones in the family. They are activities that allow you to explore the most interesting attractions from the island, to know its nature, part of its history and culture with that touch of games and fun that the youngest members of the family enjoy so much. Landscapes, monumental sets, castles, volcanoes, caves, theme parks or the incredible beaches of Tenerife are part of this special trip plan. With a little imagination, any visit can become a great adventure and if, moreover, the visits are specially designed for the young, the things are even better.
Explore a prehistoric jungle
With more than a thousand kilometers of trails, Tenerife is one of the best options to practice trekking in Europe. The mildness of the weather, with temperatures between 18 and 24 degrees celsius on average throughout the year, is an extra incentive to enjoy nature any time of the year. The rural park of Anaga is one of the most spectacular natural spaces in the island and it has recently received the tittle of Biosphere Reserve by the UNESCO. The laurisilva is a relic of plants that has survived from the Cenozoic or tertiary era (between 65 million and 300,000 years ago) in the form of an always green forest that barely lets any light reach the floor. There are trails for every taste and level, but if going with kids we propose you any of the circular trails of La Cruz del Carmen (Access by the TF-12 from La Laguna in direction to Las Mercedes) where the kids can explore without any danger and without great efforts.
Defend the island from a pirate attack
For centuries, the coasts of the Canary Islands were under the constant threat of pirates and corsairs from the countries that were Spain’s rivals for the control of the sea routes. As a consequence of those convulsive years many defensive towers and small castles, that still survive, were built to defend the beaches and ports from possible enemy landings.
Sail between whales and dolphins
Between the southern coast of Tenerife and the Island of La Gomera there is a true sanctuary of sea life that is characterized by the great amount of sea fauna. In all the sea that surrounds the Archipelago is easy to see cetaceans from various species, but in this small part of the Atlantic various groups of dolphins and long-finned pilot whales have established their permanent homes, living in this area throughout the year. The sea excursions to enjoy this amazing spectacle leave from the ports of Los Cristianos, Puerto Colón and Los Gigantes. The authorized boats have a blue flag as a distinctive that not only guarantees the safety of the travelers, but also the well-being and security of the cetaceans themselves; the sea is their home and we should not bother them.
Climbing the highest mountain in Spain
One of the main activities to enjoy Tenerife with kids is to go up the National Park of El Teide that every year attracts more than 3 million visitors. The highest peak in Spain is the highest point of an enormous crater of volcanic origin that offers impressive landscapes and the possibility to explore places that seem from another world. Going to the top of El Teide by foot is an adventure only suitable for people with a very good physical condition, but there is another option suitable for kids. The cable car allows you to overcome in a few minutes the 1,200 meters of height between the base of the volcano and La Rambleta, a small platform where the upper station is located. From there starts the trail that covers the last 200 meters up to the highest peak of Spain. The view is simply spectacular and the ride in the cable car is already an experience in itself. To access the peak through the Telesforo Bravo trail, you need to ask for a permit (a form), but it is worth doing it.
To be among penguins or to see eagles fly
A family destination like Tenerife is generous on touristic attractions of all kinds and zoos tend to be a recurring resource to entertain the small travelers. One of the most famous parks in Spain is Loro Parque (Address: C/ Galeón sn –Puerto de la Cruz-; Opening hours : Monday to Sunday 8.30 – 18.45), a center that combines the exhibition of animals with its preservation through programs like the recovery of abused animals from other centers or the programs of reintroduction of endangered species to their natural habitat. It has an impressive aquarium and an Antarctic habitat, where you can see penguins in a place so close to the tropic. Another recommended place is the Jungle Park (Address: Urbanización Las Águilas del Teide sn –Arona-; Tel: (+34) 922 729 010; Opening hours: Monday to Sunday 10.00 –17.00) and its spectacular program of birds of prey.
Living an aquatic adventure
Impressive slides, wave pools, brave rivers you can discover in giant rubber rings, water tunnels, caves… In the south of Tenerife there are two water parks where you can spend a fun and soaking day. Siam Park is one of the reference parks, not just in the Canary Islands but in all of Europe.
Travel to the stars and discover other planets
Tenerife is the headquarters of the Astrophysical Institute of the Canary Islands, one of the most prestigious scientific institutions in the world. On the summits of the Island and in the neighboring island of La Palma we found modern telescopes that scrutinize the most remote corners of the universe. For the astronomer apprentices you have the Science and Cosmos museum in La Laguna, an interactive center specially designed for children, where they can discover, through experimentation, the secrets of science and cosmos. Obviously, this center is specialized in astrophysics for all audiences, and it has one of the bets planetariums in Spain. Going to the center of the earth
The bravest ones can prove their courage going to the depths of the earth through the Cueva del Viento, a volcanic tube of several kilometers of length, closely related with the Teide’s eruptions. It has an extension of 17 kilometers, which makes it the fifth largest cavity of this type in the world. The visitable section allows you to discover the morphology and the conditions for life in this type of ecosystems. For the parents it is a unique opportunity to know an imposing natural space and to learn a little bit more about the Canarian volcanoes (The tour includes explaining panels and all the visits are done by guides with a high expertise on the subject); for the kids it is a real adventure. Address: Camino de los piquetes, 27 –Icod de los Vinos-; Tel: (+34) 922 815 339.
Or simply go to the beach throughout the year
The weather is one of the Tenerife’s strengths. The mildness of the temperatures allows you to enjoy outdoor activities throughout the year. The beach included. The Island has an enormous amount and variety of places to get close to the sea. There are beaches specially recommended for kids where there are no dangers of currents or big waves. Good examples are Las Teresitas, in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and Las Américas, Los Cristianos, or Playa Colón in Arona. Another choice that conquers the little ones is the pool complex of Lago Martianez, in Puerto de la Cruz, where there are spaces specially designed for the enjoyment of the younger ones.
Once you’ve finished the activities proposed in this nine activities to enjoy Tenerife with kids, your body and your family’s deserve some special attention. The Island has spas and massage centers.
